It is always a popular attraction for people of all ages in Weyburn – the outdoor rink. The rink, located in Jubilee Park behind the Credit Union Spark Centre, is now open for the season, a little later than normal thanks to the mild December.

“We’re really thankful for the community’s patience on this one,” said Andrew Crowe. He is the director of leisure services for the City of Weyburn. “We’ve had a bit of a challenge getting things in and getting that ice open for use, but our staff have been going hard this last little bit here to put on the final floods, and we are now open for public use.”

Crowe said they do as people refrain from using sticks and pucks on the ODR between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“We like to keep that kind of as a public skate time so parents or caregivers and their children can get out and learn how to skate,” Crowe offered. “And then we have open skate from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on a daily basis, and that’s open to anybody who may just want to go for a skate, or somebody who wants to go shoot a puck around or play a game or anything like that.”

Crowe added they ask everyone to respect one another when they are on the ice and to think about their actions so no one gets hurt.

While the ODR is now open, the Weyburn Leisure Centre does remain closed for the time being. A water main break on the line that services the building resulted in the water supply being cut off.

"Public works crews are there, they’re currently digging and trying to find the extent of the damages,” Crowe explained. “We’re hopeful that it’ll be a minor repair that they can get through today, and we don’t see too much interruption to our programming.”

Late Friday afternoon, it was confirmed the Weyburn Leisure Centre would remain closed through the weekend and Monday. The City of Weyburn will provide an update on Monday as to the status of the Leisure Centre.
