The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will be back in action Wednesday night when they head to Kindersley to take on the Klippers. The Wings have been off since October 28th, when they fell 9-2 to the Battlefords North Stars at Crescent Point Place. The break came at a good time for the team, though, said head coach Cody Mapes.

“I think even just the mental side of it, for guys to get home and see family and just get away from the rink for a few days consecutively is definitely good,” the bench boss for the Wings stated. “The guys came back on the weekend and had a little extra jump in their step during practice, so that was good to see. I think everybody’s rejuvenized now for the stretch here til Christmas time.”

The Red Wings will be spending a fair bit of time away from home over the next 10 days as well. After playing in Kindersley on Wednesday, they head to North Battleford for two games against the North Stars on Friday and Saturday. Then, it is off to Warman for the SJHL Showcase, where they will play Flin Flon, and then the North Stars once again.

“Me and Brayden (Klimosko, head coach of the North Stars) were talking yesterday,” Mapes laughed. “We were saying we’re going to be sick of seeing each other here after five games in three weeks against Battlefords.”

Mapes pointed out the team has had some solid practice time ahead of the trip, and will be looking to start off the trip with a win in Kindersley.

The game Wednesday will be the first meeting of the season between the Red Wings and the Klippers.

Kindersley will be coming into the game on a two-game winning streak, picking up a pair of wins at home over the Nipawin Hawks and the Yorkton Terriers. The Klippers have also been strong on home ice this season, with four wins at the West Central Events Centre in six games.

“They’ve been very good at home in their rink there,” Mapes said of the opponents. “We just got to continue to get better every day here.”

The puck drops for the game Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. You can catch all the action on Great Plains Ford Red Wing Radio BIG 106. The pregame show starts at 7:15 p.m.
