For the fifth time in six years, and for the fourth year in a row, Weyburn’s Rick Hallberg is the province’s Senior Men’s golf champion. He finished the tournament, which wrapped up Wednesday at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert, with a three-round score of 218, four strokes back of the second-place finisher.

“Pretty satisfying this year,” Hallberg said after the tournament. “I knew it was going to be really tough up here because there’s so many good players, and guys I play with all the time. They know the course well, and they’re just good players, flat out.”

Hallberg opened play on Monday with a 3-over 74. He would bogey the first hole of the day but bounced back with a birdie on the third. He would end up recording a birdie on three holes while shooting six bogeys to end up with the 74.

In the second round, Hallberg came out firing, with a 1-ver 72. His only real miscue was a double-bogey on the par-4 13th hole. This would counter the eagle he had on the par-5 7th hole on the front nine. He would finish off the day with three bogeys and two birdies.

To finish the tournament off, Hallberg would start off the final round with a double bogey but then bounced back with three birdies over the next five holes. His only other blemishes were bogeys on the 12th and 18th, as he completed the round with a 1-over 72.

With the win, Hallberg, along with second-place finisher Brad Phelps and third-place finisher Cliff Selander, are now off to the national championships as Team Saskatchewan, and Hallberg is hoping to bring back the championship.

“We got a really good one this year, so I think we got a good chance this year,” Hallberg said.

Hallberg has helped Saskatchewan to two second-place finishes in the past at the national championships.
