The Weyburn Police Service put more than one person into cells last week for public intoxication.

In one of the incidents, officers responded to a report of a heavily intoxicated male located outside of a local business. The male was arrested, held in custody until sober, and charged with unlawfully having open alcohol in public.

It wasn't a simple "drunk tank" situation, but that is often the best solution when there's no other option.

"More often than not, if we come across somebody or we have a report of someone that's intoxicated in public, it's a safety issue more than anything," explained Deputy Chief Brent VanDeSype. "So we try, unless there's some other extenuating circumstances, to turn them over to someone that can care for them, and just ensure that they're safe. But there are occasions, or other circumstances, where we may provide the accommodations for the night."

In the other incident, patroling officers noticed an adult male banging on the window of a vehicle with an adult female sitting inside.

"It was in the hotel area, so it appears that he had stumbled across from where he was sleeping for the evening, or planned to sleep for the evening, but was intoxicated," he shared. "Officers saw this, they stopped. They thought they'd check on the safety of both of them."

Flagrant open alcohol consumption, including taking sips in front of officers, resulted in the man being, "provided accommodation from the night, and charged for open alcohol."

VanDeSype said now that the weather is getting cooler, it's important for everyone going out drinking to plan ahead for a safe ride home.
