The Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles Mixed Curling Team traveled over the weekend to Yorkton to compete in one of the SHSAA Regional Playdowns.

The Eagles Mixed Curling team was skipped by Grade 12, Owen Klein, the Third Grade 11, Kristin Loroff, Seconded by Grade 12, Jeremy Symes, and the Lead, Grade 10, Reegan Chicoine and coached by Adam Loroff.

The team started off with a win vs Indian Head, then took on Yorkton Sacred Heart (who had a bye the first round). WCS played well and had their chances to defeat the higher seed, but came out on the short end of the broom. That led to a must-win game Friday night, their third in the day, vs Broadview.

Chad Klein said, "It was a very good curling game with each player coming up with big shots, great sweeping and kept their competition going. The Eagles team was down 2-0 facing going down more, but Owen Klein made a clutch draw to tie the game at 2-2. After a shakey next couple ends the Eagles were down 5-2 after the fourth end, but got three back in the fifth to tie it up at 5-5. Eagles then stole three in the next two ends to go up 8-5 to go to the quarter-final game on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m."

In the Saturday morning game versus Yorkton Regional, the Eagles again needed to win to move on to the semi-finals. The Eagles started off slow but kept in the game and were down 3-5 after six ends. They were down four points in the eighth end, and most would think the math would be over. However, the Eagles kept their competition going and were sitting three with one rock from each skip left. The Raiders skip made a nice draw to make Klein's shot for four and a chance to go into an extra end. Klein took his deep breath and slid out, the sweepers stayed close and worked hard by the rock just grazed the guard to bring the Eagles' weekend and a chance to go to provincials to an end.

The four young curlers played well, never gave up, and, with the help of Coach Loroff, they represented Weyburn Comprehensive with Eagles pride and sportsmanship, earning much respect from the other curling teams and the coaches this past weekend.

The Lampman Mixed curling team (last year's provincial mixed curling SHSAA champions) are hosting provincials this upcoming weekend in Lampman.
