The time around Christmas and New Year's has traditionally been known to see an increase in things such as impaired driving, domestic disturbances, and more. This past Christmas, however, seemed to be a little tamer than most years.

“Overall, I think the two weeks involving Christmas and New Year’s went quite well,” said Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSype. “It was relatively quiet, or I should say, quieter than normal, for call volumes.”

VanDeSype pointed out there was one more part of the season that the WPS had no problem reporting.

“We were very pleased with the amount of, or I should say, the lack of impaired driving,” VanDeSype continued. “We had a couple of high visibility enforcement traffic stops, and all I can say is that other than a few impaired that were caught in the first couple of weeks of December, other than that, over the holiday season itself and into the new year, there were no impaireds that I’m away of.”

The start of 2024 was also quiet, relatively speaking, for Weyburn police. In the week of January 1st to 7th, there were 65 calls for service, resulting in 12 charges. Nine of those charges were under the Criminal Code, and four were related to people who either failed to attend court or failed to comply with a condition of their release. The other three charges were all under the Traffic Safety Act.
