The City of Weyburn will be recognizing the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation that will be taking place on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

The Government of Canada recently passed legislation marking this day to honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities.

"The City of Weyburn will be observing that day to commemorate the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action," stated Mathew Warren, City Manager for the City of Weyburn. "So there's actually 94 calls of action that are part of that and the City does recognize what is included."

The creation of this federal statutory holiday was through legislative amendments made by Parliament. On June 3, 2021, Bill C-5, An Act to amend the Bills of Exchange Act, the Interpretation Act and the Canada Labour Code (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) received Royal Assent.

To honour the importance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City of Weyburn civic offices will be closed on September 30, including City Hall and the Public Works building.

Area 1 refuse pickup for Thursday, September 30 will be moved to Friday, October 1. Area 2 pickup will also be on that day.

The Weyburn Leisure Centre, Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena will be open to user group programming on September 30 in the evening.
