Several students from the Weyburn Comprehensive School came home with medals from the provincial trades competition in Saskatoon this week.

The competition featured 54 trades, which included hairdressing, cooking, baking, electricity, electronics, welding, machining, carpentry, mechanics and more.

Fourteen students from Weyburn took part in the competion, which was staged by Skills Canada Saskatchewan. Students were expected to showcase key essentials for the workplace such as numeracy, oral communication, and working with others.

"It's just a great competition for the students," said Rod Nieviadomy, WCS shop teacher and liaison for some students prior to the event. "They come away with a feeling of pride and accomplishment."

Those included medal winners:

  • Braiding - Silver: Oksana van Staveren
  • Braiding - Bronze: Brittany Bowler
  • Bridal - Silver: Oksana van Staveren
  • IT Software Applications - Bronze : Tatum Abel
  • Electronics - Silver: Nathan Wlasichuk
  • Welding - Silver: Riley Croal
