Southeast Saskatchewan could be in for some rough weather over the next 48 hours.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather advisory for the Weyburn area and much of southern Saskatchewan. Dave Carlson, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, explained the reason is a system that is currently sitting over the B.C. coast that is going to start making its way eastward.

“That’s going to end up moving across Saskatchewan tomorrow afternoon,” Carlson said. “As it does so, it's going to bring quite a lot of wind – west or northwest winds – to a lot of southern Saskatchewan. We’re talking wind gusts of 80 to 90 kilometres an hour through the afternoon.”

Before the system reaches the Weyburn area, there will be some precipitation falling in the area, coming in the form of rain and snow.

“There’s already a band of light rain showers mixed with flurries over southwestern Saskatchewan that’s just going to march eastwards throughout the day,” added Carlson. “It’s not going to be a tremendous amount of rain or snow, and by the time it gets to southeastern Saskatchewan I think it's going to be more in the form of rain this afternoon.”

With the system coming into Saskatchewan that will bring the winds tomorrow, there is a chance for more snow, but what comes to the Weyburn area will pale in comparison to what parts of northern Saskatchewan will see.

“A couple of centimetres of snow tomorrow night, but talking really one or two, whereas farther north, from about Meadow Lake over to Prince Albert to The Pas, Manitoba, there’s going to be much more snow, and we’re looking at somewhere between 15 and 35 centimetres,” stated Carlson.
