The season is over for the Toronto Blue Jays. After holding on to homefield advantage for the wild-card game and winning it in dramatic fashion, then sweeping the Texas Rangers in the ALDS, the Jays fell 3-0 to Cleveland last night, letting them take the  best-of-seven ALCS in five games.

The story of the night was Ryan Merritt. The rookie pitcher for Cleveland was making his second ever start in the major leagues, having only pitched 11 innings coming into the game. He kept the bats of the Blue Jays silent through 4 ⅓ innings, striking out three, while allowing just two hits.

Offensively, Cleveland got on the board early in the game, when Mike Napoli drive in Francisco Lindor with a double in the first inning. The scoring was followed up by solo home runs from Carlos Santana and Coco Crisp. Santana was also responsible for making the final out of the game, to clinch the series.

The Blue Jays had trouble getting anything going offensively throughout the series, coming up against a tough pitching staff. Toronto mustered only eight runs in the five games played, with the potent bats of Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Donaldson all but silenced when it mattered.

Pitching wise, the Blue Jays did receive strong performances in all five games, with Cleveland only able to score three or more runs twice in the series. Without the lively bats of the Blue Jays, which stunned the Texas Rangers in three straight games, though, it would be all for naught.

From here, Cleveland now prepares for the World Series. They won’t know their opponent until Saturday at the earliest, as the Chicago Cubs play the Los Angeles Dodgers. That series is tied at two games apiece. Game five of the series will be played Thursday night in Los Angeles, with game six at Wrigley Field in Chicago Saturday.
