Weyburn's Lydia Niemegeers and the Carnduff Southeast Steelers have come home champions from the Senior B Women's Western Canadian Softball Championship held in Abbotsford, B.C., last weekend.

The Steelers took the gold medal game 7-0 against the Calgary Red Sox.

Niemegeers, catcher for the Steelers, said she played with the southeast team this year because members of the team asked her to help fill the roster. Niemegeers previously played for a senior women's softball team in Regina, which didn't have the women-power to fill its roster again this season.

Niemegeers had a successful showing during the championship tournament. She hit a homerun in the final game and also brought home the batting award, having hit .533 through the round robin.

Seven women’s teams, from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, competed in the tournament.
