It was a chance for parents to join their children for lunch and have their children read to them. The event was called Literacy for Lunch, and was held at Haig School Wednesday.

The gymnasium was packed as students and parents shared a meal together. From there, they scattered across the halls of the school, sitting down and sharing a book or two. The event was part of Education Week.

Celina Crone, whose children go to Haig, was one of the many parents in attendance.

“It was actually really nice to get to sit down and let them read to me instead of me doing it to them,” Crone said at the end of the lunch hour. She wasn’t the only one who was pleased with the success of the event.

Jaclyn Neilmeyer is the vice-principal at Haig. She said it was a great event for the families to come to school, and enjoy and celebrate reading with the children.

“Reading and increasing literacy is one of our goals of the school and the division, of course,” Neilmeyer explained. Having families come in during education week, engaging with their child and having it in the school, helps promote the love of literacy.”

Schools throughout Weyburn, and the province, have been holding events to commemorate Education Week, which ends Friday.
