A Weyburn Police officer and a couple of dozen other officers from around the province put themselves to the test on the weekend.

They rode bicycles in the driving rain, from Saskatoon to Regina, as part of the Ride to Remember. Constable Jeffrey Bartsch, who has kept himself in shape through marathon runs, told Discover Weyburn it was a gruelling experience. "We started out, and as we progressed down Highway 16 east, the winds were very strong, and the rain was quite driving. It was quite a challenge. We were definitely wet, and it was quite tough."

The bike ride was a solemn occasion, in honour of police officers who gave up their lives in the line of duty.

Bartsch had a personal connection. He trained with RCMP Constable Derek Pineo, who died in a collission with a moose near Wilkie in 2012.

The first leg of the tour ended Friday in Watrous. They continued Saturday into Regina. "Regina was very welcoming. There was people all along Albert Street north, all the way down Albert Street into the Legislative Building area there." said Bartsch. "

It was a very welcoming moment for all of us, a very humbling moment. It was hard to keep the emotions back as we rode down Albert Street."

On Sunday, the officers took part in the annual Police and Peace Officers Memorial Day, which was held at the Legislature. The Memorial day is an annual commemoration, held on the last Sunday of every September.
