The cause of a massive power outage affecting the city of Weyburn, as well as the surrounding communities, is said to be an issue at a substation.

A representative for SaskPower said controls at a substation within the Weyburn area were not working properly, causing an outage in Weyburn, Francis, Milestone, Lang, Yellow Grass and Sedley around 5:40 p.m., Tuesday evening.

The outage was said to affect 13,000 customers in Weyburn and 1,800 customers in surrounding areas.

Weyburn's power was restored around 6:10 p.m., while surrounding communities were out of power until closer to midnight.

When asked about a possible explosion seen in the Yellow Grass area, SaskPower could not confirm if that took place or had any relation to the power outage.

On Wednesday around 4:50 p.m., and outage affected Bengough, Ceylon, Lake Alma, Minton, Ogema, Radville, Trossachs and surrounding rural communities. The cause was said to be transmission related.
