The Weyburn Humane Society is overwhelmed with the number of cats in their shelter as they are at triple capacity, and also have 19 cats in foster homes. In an effort to move them out of the shelter, spayed or neutered cats are being sold for $25 each.

“So, we do get calls every single day from people that want to bring cats in.” Says Shelter Manager, Colleen Morrice. “An example on the weekend was a cat that had frozen off ears and a broken tail. We did find him a foster home.”

Morrice says the shelter is currently on an intake freeze.

“It's really hard to say no to these cats that are out as strays. It makes it very difficult for all of the staff to have to deal with that, and then when the public gets angry because we do not have space, but our space is very limited here.”

Morrice has some advice to help control the stray population.

“Spay and neuter your cat is number one, and also do not let your cats roam. There is a city bylaw of not letting your cats out so if everybody could follow that, we would have a lot less problems in the city of Weyburn.”

With the number of cats that the shelter is looking after, they are in need of supplies.

“We use the fresh for life cat litter from Pet Valu and we are using a ton. We're using about 20 bags a week just with so many cats, plus we give to the fosters. So, any kitten food, cat litter, and cleaning supplies.”

To purchase or foster a cat, you can go to the shelter and fill out an application. Once the application is approved you can pick up your cat. If you foster a cat, the Humane Society will supply things like cat food and litter.
