For some farmers, the second cut for Alfala will be an improvement over the first cut.

Andre Bonneau, Forage Conversion Specialist from the Ag Knowledge Centre says the first cut was strange compared to normal years, as it was fairly dry and cool for most of the spring.

Bonneau says when the rains did come in, the Alfalfa did not come off until mid to late July.

Bonneau adding a lot of the Alfalfa that did come off got rained on or it came off very late when it was in full flour.

Bonneau says farmers who took off the first cut early will see a better second cut, as it benefitted from decent moisture, and adds the hay from it will look very desirable.
