A second case of monkeypox has been reported in Saskatchewan, and public health officials are advising that the risk of the virus in Saskatchewan remains low.

The case, reported Friday, is not related to the first case announced on Wednesday, according to officials. The public health investigation, which includes contact tracing, is underway, but it looks likely the person contracted the virus outside of the province.

Public health officials state monkeypox does not easily spread from person to person. It is spread through prolonged face-to-face close contact, touching bodily fluids or lesions of a person who has monkeypox or exposure to contaminated objects such as bedding or clothing.

If anyone who has travelled to parts of Canada or the world with confirmed cases of monkeypox and develops symptoms, which include fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes, they are asked to contact 811 or a health care provider immediately.
