Do you know someone who could use an extra $2,000 for their music education?

Applications are open for the Helen Davidson Music Award and are due April 30th.

“It's a ways off yet, but this time, when the Music Festival is on, is a good time to talk about applications because they require a DVD for the application,” said Committee Member Gloria Miller. “When they're all practising and working hard for their repertoire, it would be nice to get that done and do it while they're still ‘hot’ from the festival.”

Miller said anyone from the Weyburn area who is pursuing an education in music can apply.

“It's in any genre of music,” she explained. “We've had voice, we've had instruments, we've had piano. Whatever musical things you're working on. I just think it's a wonderful award.”

She said the award has been given to 13 winners over the past ten years, with some years having two winners.

“So we're just here to help promote Helen Davidson's passion for music and wanting to learn,” explained Miller.

She said musicians of any age can apply, so long as they’re still striving to do things in music.

Miller shared some inspiring details about the woman behind the award.

“Helen Davidson was a piano teacher for many years in the Weyburn area,” she said. “She used to go out to Bengough and Radville and teach out there. She'd take the train from Weyburn to these places, and stay a couple of days, and have these piano students.”

She said Davidson taught music for more than 65 years. She was a Registered Music Associate for over 50 years, playing the organ and leading the choir at Calvary Baptist Church for 60 years. She was a life member of the Alexandria Rebekah Lodge and a member of the Quota International of Weyburn.

“She was a remarkable woman and she contributed so much to our community,” said Miller. “She was also an instigator of many of the things we enjoy here in Weyburn, like the Music festival, which is on right now.”

Miller said the winner of the award will have a reception in June to celebrate their musical progress and their accomplishment.

“We hold it up at the TC Douglas Centre, it's a wonderful venue for such an event. We always follow it with a reception and whoever wins provides the recital, the music for that evening,” she said.
