With the warm weather upon us, more and more people are getting their bicycles out for the season, and taking to the street and to the trails.

With cyclists back on the road, there are a few things everyone should keep in mind. We caught up with Constable Lisa Robertson with the Weyburn Police Service to find out what safety tips people should remember.

“You should be wearing a helmet all the time,” Robertson said. “That’s the number one safety priority.” She added that people need to be alert and aware all the time – both cyclists and motorists.

Those on bicycles shouldn’t be riding on sidewalks, and shouldn’t be weaving in and out of traffic and parked vehicles. When able to, those on bicycles should use hand signals to show their intention, whether it is to stop or turn.

“You have the same rules and rights as people driving on the road, so follow the rules as vehicle would,” Robertson explained. This means coming to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights, and then proceeding when allowed to do so.

When riding a bicycle at night, Robertson said bright clothing can help others see you. As well, bicycles should be equipped with lights and reflectors. Having a bell on the bicycle is also good to let people know when you are coming upon them.

Part of being aware of the surroundings at all times is also to not wear ear buds.

"We advise not to have ear buds in when you are riding a bike, in case there’s a situation going on around you; you’ll be able to hear it.”
