It was a big year for the Southeast College Swing for Scholarships fundraiser, and a big change was announced on Friday at the annual event.

"This is our 20th year and I want you to know this is a big deal. This is the very last time this will be called the Southeast College Swing for Scholarships because we have engaged a new partner and this partner has engaged with us on a five-year term as our presenting sponsor," shared Jeff Richards of South East College, who emceed the event.

The 21st annual golf fundraiser will be called the Weyburn Credit Union Swing for Scholarships.

The event this year raised about $17,000 for southeast Saskatchewan students seeking post-secondary education. The provincial government matches those donations through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship.

Minister of Energy and Resources Bronwyn Eyre was the guest speaker at the event. She said the fundraiser has raised $366,000 in the past decade alone.

"Saskatchewan has the food and the fuel and the fertilizer that the world needs, but as you all know these resources are not enough. We need human resources," shared Minister Eyre. "We need human resources, trained people, to work in our diverse sectors, industries, businesses that continue to evolve and innovate."

President and CEO of Southeast College Dion McGrath also spoke at the event. He told the crowd of donors that the fundraiser is about community building.

"What you're doing and who receives your gifts doesn't affect just one individual, it often affects those that are around that individual, whether its a spouse, whether it's their children, and it affects those in the community," said McGrath. "By helping others find success you also bless the lives of those around them through their future success."

The fundraiser featured about 90 golfers, including MLA Dustin Duncan, who took part in 18 holes at the Weyburn Golf Club Friday afternoon. The supper and speeches took place Friday evening at the Cugnet Centre.
