A Moose wanders into Weyburn...

On Monday a young bull moose had to be escorted out of the city.

“When the City Police arrived, he was probably about 150 yards from the residences. They hazed him off and it took off a little bit further north and ended up laying down in the field directly north of the city.” Local Conservation Officer with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Lindsey Leko said. “So, we drove up with our truck and hazed him off a little bit further to the north. That's the last we saw and heard of him and we're just hoping he stays out of the city.”

While it happens on occasion, Leko says it isn’t common for moose to come into Weyburn.

“I would suggest it’s not as common as it is in in a place like Regina, and I'm not sure what it is, I just think that there is a lot more area for the moose to get around, but here in Weyburn we get maybe two to three a year.”

Leko stressed the importance of keeping your distance if you see a moose in the city. “They're wild animals, and they're very unpredictable, so it's important to keep your distance and you could call the city police and advise them, or you could call the poacher's line.”

It’s also important to keep your kids and pets away and to keep your distance when taking a photo.
