The future of the grounds of the former Souris School has been determined by the board of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division.

The board unanimously voted in favour of a motion from Weyburn board member Norma Hewitt-Lendrum to sell the grounds of the school, which was demolished in December of last year, to Winkler, Manitoba-based Bridge Road Land Management. The sale comes at an agreed-upon price of $130,500.

The developer has plans to build a multi-level senior residential care complex on the grounds.

Souris School was closed at the end of the 2020-21 school year. In November of 2022, SECPSD voted to demolish the building after there were no buyers for the land and the building.

"We've been trying to sell the property and the facility itself, since June of '21," said Gord Husband, Deputy Director of Human Resources and Infrastructure this past November. At the time, Husband noted that most of the inquiries for the property were for the land itself, as opposed to the land and the building.

The demolition of the school started on December 10th of last year and was completed shortly afterwards.

There is no word at this time as to how long it will be before the construction is planned for the new building.
