The Weyburn Police Service, along with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, held a check stop in the city this past Wednesday. The goal of the check stop was not only to make sure drivers weren’t impaired behind the wheel but to also reward those who were driving sober.

Deputy Police Chief Brent Vandesype explained they had gift cards for places such as Tim Hortons, 7-11 and Boston Pizza, as well as items from SGI, to provide for the drivers.

“When we do these things, we don’t want to catch impaired drivers – we'd rather catch all the sober ones and know that everyone’s safe out there and driving sober,” Vandesype said. “It’s really positive. We enjoy handing those out when we have them.”

Quite a few drivers were through the check stop Wednesday evening, and nearly all of them weren’t impaired.

“In this case, there was over 150 checked during that check stop on Wednesday evening, and there were two drivers that did test positive for THC and ultimately saw the consequences,” Vandesype stated.

With Christmas coming up in less than a week, and New Year’s the week after that, the Weyburn Police Service is reminding drivers to not drive impaired this holiday season.

“We wish everybody a very happy, enjoyable, safe holiday season and we’re just very glad to see that the vast majority are driving sober and drug-free, and we wish it would be a hundred percent,” concluded Vandesype.
