The wild shift in weather yesterday led to some icy conditions in the Opportunity City.

At 5:00 a.m., it was 4 degrees and the snow was melting. By 5 p.m., temperatures had dropped to -13 and the wind picked up, causing all that melt to freeze very quickly.

While several sirens were heard throughout the day, and an accident was noticed on Fifth Street, Chief of Police for the Weyburn Police Service Jamie Blunden noted that there were only two incidents caused by icy conditions.

"Most people in Weyburn have been through this type of weather and these conditions a few times this year," he said. "I'm going to suggest that many of our residents are better drivers at this time of year when it comes down to icy conditions."

He also credited City crews for their help in reducing the risk of accidents.

"The City Public Works crews were out sanding pretty early today and helping out," he noted.

Given that colder temperatures are expected to continue today, he did note a few 'best practices' to help avoid a possible collision.

"The best way to avoid sliding through intersections is to slow down and drive for conditions," he said. "Start braking sooner and slow down further away from the intended stop."

While there are still a few icy intersections in the City, highways in the area appear to be in better decent condition first thing this morning. That can change in an instant though and before you head out it's best to check current conditions on our Road Report Link.
