An abundance of rain in Weyburn since the start of May has caused some issues. It has flooded basements, waterlogged streets, and more. But some of the issues haven’t been readily visible until it’s too late – sinkholes.

“Most of the sinkholes are related to a failure,” explained Jennifer Wilkinson, the Director of Engineering with the City of Weyburn. “In one area, we have a sinkhole that was due to the sewer main failing and collapsing, creating the sinkhole.”

In another instance, Wilkinson noted the sinkhole was created due to a failure of a culvert.

The sinkhole that emerged on Coteau Avenue, caused by the aforementioned sewer main failure, has prompted the city to close down a portion of the street, between 6th Street and 8th Street, to make the repairs.

Wilkinson said the people of Weyburn can help out as well. When they notice a sinkhole starting to develop, they can contact the Public Works Department at (306) 848-3290 from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Outside of those hours, the public can contact the on-call number (306) 861-2163. The information can also be found on the City of Weyburn website.
