If your scheduled City of Weyburn Refuse Collection day is tomorrow or Friday, you might want to make sure you get it to the curb. The City is switching to bi-weekly garbage pickup beginning next week.

"The City of Weyburn is committed to maintaining a sustainable community, and this is the perfect time to test bi-weekly pickups, in the wintertime, because they're not going to produce odours or pest problems," said Public Relations Coordinator with the City of Weyburn, Adam Hoffart. "We want to accommodate the rising costs of landfill operation and prolong the lifespan of our landfill, so just looking to the future to make sure we have all those things in place."

The City has provided Weyburn residents with Green For Life blue bins for sorting out their recyclables. Others have blue bin service through Blue Earth.

"The bi-weekly pickup ensures that less waste is going to go to our landfill, and it strongly encourages citizens to recycle their paper, plastic and cardboard products. We're looking to the future, more or less like we do with the water conservation bylaw," noted Hoffart.

He added the City of Weyburn encourages residents to think about the waste they're generating and how to manage it responsibly.

"So you can do that by splitting up your garbage and recycling, and using that recycling bin is really going to help with the amount of waste that goes to the landfill," he said.

He reminds there will be no pickups at all next week, with the collection resuming on a bi-weekly basis on the week of November 25th.
