An increase in enrollment this week at Weyburn Comprehensive School has led to an adjustment in classrooms for some students.

"Every year the School Division and schools do a review of enrollment at the end of September," explained Principal Ryan Fowler. "If there are any hot spots, then the division will react with an increase of staffing or other alternative measures to address the hot spots."

"A hot spot meaning that our classes are loading with a number that, if we can reduce it by adding a section, we will, to provide opportunities for our kids to continue to be successful just with a smaller class setting, versus a larger class setting," he clarified.

He said this is done every year at this time of year.

"This year when we did our review, we were up approximately 70 students," Fowler said. "Any of our largest classes, we were able to split them in half, so we were able to go from numbers of 36 to 38, down to 16 to 18 or 20, just depending on how the split was worked out with the teachers."

Two new teachers were hired as a result. The changes affected Grade 8 and Grade 10 students.

"We still provide the opportunities, even in the classes that are loading at 32, or 34 or even 36," he noted. "[Smaller classes] helps to provide different opportunities for them when they're in a smaller loading section, and the teachers are able to continue doing the good things they're doing."

He said the transition has gone smoothly this week, sharing that they look forward to finishing off the semester and are still yet to determine exactly how things will look for next semester.
