Two teams will move forward to the next stage of the selection process to build the new Weyburn General Hospital.

The province’s Request for Qualifications closed on March 3, 2022. Two teams responded and have been invited to move forward to the request for proposal stage: PCL Construction Management, and Wright Construction Western.

PCL Construction Management, which was founded in Stoughton in 1906, is a group of independent construction companies that form Canada's largest general contracting firm. Saskatoon-based Wright Construction Western has been operating in Saskatchewan since 1905, and recently constructed the new Legacy Park Elementary School and community recreation centre in Weyburn.

"It's a good thing for the Weyburn area community, because it's a step in the process," said Jeff Hayward, Chair of the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. "They went through the request for qualifications, and that closed out and now they're going to the request for proposals. So the next step, I guess, once that's done, I think it's in early September, they can move to the next phase, which could be construction in late 2022. I think they've set a date of 2024 to have it completed by, and two years can fly by, so this could be a reality in a real short time."

"It's been a long process. A very, very long journey."

"Even before I got on, years before I was even involved with the hospital foundation," he noted. "So, getting nearing the end of this first part of the journey is thrilling for me and being on the hospital foundation to be involved in this is very exciting."

Hayward said both companies competing have each got a proven track record.

"The hospital is alive and well, and is progressing forward, and the the the people of Weyburn have waited a long time for this, but the light is at the end of the tunnel, so to speak, here, as we move forward with this and this is just another great step towards completing that."

"We are very pleased to have two qualified Saskatchewan companies in the running to bring us closer to construction of the new Weyburn General Hospital," said Education Minister and Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan. "We are eager to see the building take shape and look forward to the facility's opening in the future."

The new hospital will be located on the north side of 5th Avenue North.

The RFP closes in September, and construction of the new hospital is expected to begin later this year with completion targeted for late 2024. The cost of the facility will be determined through the competitive process.
