Weyburn Police and Fire Services on the scene of an active fire at Sixth Street and First Avenue north east at around 7:30 p.m. this evening.

The public is being asked to avoid the area.

According to the information obtainable on the scene, fire alarms went off at a retirement home and the residents were evacuated from the building.

Fire trucks arrived on the scene, shortly followed by two police vehicles, once they realized the building was safe. This is because it was discovered that someone was burning prohibited substances, which are being contained.

Fire Chief Trent Lee said he would provide further details in the morning, as it is now a police matter.
