The U18 AAA Weyburn Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings host the Swift Current Wildcats this weekend in their home opener.
The Gold Wings started their regular season last weekend with two losses to the Battlefords Sharks.
“We, unfortunately, lost in overtime in the first game, and in the second game, we lost another really close battle,” Head Coach Chandy Kaip said.
The Gold Wings had their Spring Camp in April, and worked hard training throughout the summer. The team played two tournaments in the preseason, walking away with three wins out of seven games.
“I believe just three wins is probably more than the team has had in a few years for an entire season, so we're doing a lot better and the team is really coming together,” Kaip said.
Kaip hopes the team will redeem themselves this weekend.
“Swift Current has always been a hard-working team,” she said. “They always bring a lot of competitiveness to all their games, solid goaltending at the same time. We've seen them play a couple of games and we've had a little bit of a scouting report. The team is ready to really battle and we hope to get some points out of this weekend.”
Kaip said there are activities planned for the home opener, and some new things to look forward to for the rest of the season.
“We usually have a seventh player, so a young female athlete comes and skates with us on the ice. Oftentimes we have a chuck-a-puck, and we hope to open the first Gold Wing store, and the team is really excited. We have new jerseys and a completely new style, so they're really excited to show the city their new look and new team.”
Replica jerseys will be available for fans to purchase in the Gold Wings store, with the funds supporting the team. Not only are the players getting new jerseys, but they will have new gloves as well.
“That may seem small in someone else’s world, but for female hockey, that's a pretty big deal.”
Saturday’s game begins at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday’s game takes place at 1:30 p.m. at Crescent Point Place.
