The Weyburn Humane Society has found itself with more cats than they are able to handle and is overcapacity when it comes to felines.

“We have people dropping off cats like there’s no tomorrow, which is not the answer at all,” said Kaylee Van Beselaere with the Humane Society. “They’re leaving them in boxes where we can’t seem them in the cameras, and everything.”

The danger of dropping the cats off in boxes outside the door, particularly this time of year, is the exposure to the elements. Often, the kittens are nowhere near prepared for the cold, and the declining temperatures could be fatal for them.

The influx of kittens and cats to the shelter has seen the staff there having to use whatever space they can find to provide a temporary home for the kittens, including using kennels normally reserved for dogs to house them.

“We only accept cats within our area, which is the city of Weyburn, and if we are full, we are full, and we can’t accept cats,” Van Beselaere added. “We just simply don’t have space in the small building.” She added that if someone has kittens they aren’t able to care for or keep in their homes right now, to find another home for them on their own at this time.
