If you have been around the intersection of Highway 39 and 3rd Street over the past week, you may have noticed the traffic lights flashing red.

This issue seems to occur overnight and is cleared up for the later part of the day, which has many wondering if it's an intentional act.

According to Jennifer Wilkinson, Director of Engineering for the City of Weyburn, it's not.

"We actually have a bit of an issue there," she said. "We haven't been able to target exactly what the problem is. Any time there is an issue or something goes wrong, we automatically default them to flashing red so people know it's a four-way. Our biggest thing is we don't want them out completely so we default them to flashing red."

Wilkinson did note that they are trying to get this issue fixed.

"We did have a contractor out there trying to work on that and get them working," she said. "It just happens to be they go out at night and they go to that flashing red and everyone sees them in the morning."

So, to clarify, Weyburn is not following along with cities like Regina and Saskatoon and letting their lights flash in the overnight hours?

"No there was nothing intentional there's just actually a wiring issue at that intersection," laughed Wilkinson.

These aren't the only lights that the City is currently working on. You can get the latest update on the traffic lights at 2nd and Souris here.
