January is Family Literacy Month; schools will be honoring the month as well as Weyburn’s Public Library.

Katherine Wagner, Branch Manager of the Weyburn Public Library Branch, Southeast Regional Library shares the importance of literacy in the home, “It’s important for families to engage in literacy behaviors together. That includes reading together, parents reading to the child and things like rhyming games encourage literacy behaviors”

The library offers a Family Book Club as well as an Adult Book Club at the local branch.  They also have a fun initiative for families called a Family Book Club in a Bag, Wagner explains “the family reads the book together and there’s usually a game or an activity that relates to the book.”

Literacy Day is January 27th and the library is welcoming families for the day. Wagner gives the itinerary, “this year’s theme is learning in the great outdoors, so we are having some outdoor activities in the afternoon on Family Literacy Day. There will be some activities in the evening that are indoors and we will have some hot chocolates and read books about exploring nature.”
