Is the school year starting earlier? It's a question that has been brought up recently to the Southeast Cornerstone School Division.

Students head back to class on Thursday in Weyburn and Director of Education with the School Division Marc Casavant says there is a process to decide when the year starts.

"We have a group of people that works together with people from Holy Family and teachers from our school division. They put together some options and get everyone to vote on it. It might seem like it's earlier and it might be a day or two earlier than usual. I think the expectation from our board is going to be that the committee put more options together that may reflect a later start."

Casavant wants to remind motorists in Weyburn about the laws for stop arm and flashing lights on school busses. It's against the law to pass a bus, when it's stop arm is out and the lights are flashing.

At the recent board meeting, Velda Weatherald, Superintendent of the East Area Schools in the division, made a presentation to the board about what's being done in schools at White Bear, Pheasant Rump, Ocean Man and others in Southeast Cornerstone to help bring the education of First Nations to the forefront.

Casavant says the school division has a lot of good things going on with the First Nations and Metis communities. We also know this is a high priority of the Ministry so we are going to strike a committee with some of our board members and staff and start to do some brain storming on what we might be able to do in our school division.
