The Weyburn Red Wings made a huge move a few weeks backs when they brought in 20-year-old goalie Riley Lamb. Lamb had spent the last two seasons with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League where he started 73 games, as well as 10 playoff games during that time.

Lamb grew up in Rivers, Man. and played for the Yellowhead Chiefs Midget AAA team in the Manitoba Midget Hockey League. In his 17-year-old season, he led the MMHL with a .939 save percentage. Just this past February, Lamb was named Goalie of the Month for the WHL.

Now in his final season of junior hockey, Lamb is excited to be playing for a new team in an entirely new league.

"I'm excited playing with a couple guys I knew before. It's a great league, it's very competitive," Lamb said. "From the top team to the worst team is always very close, so it should be exciting and it'll be a bit different than the Western League. I'm looking forward to it."

The Red Wings weren't sure if Lamb would be interested in coming to play in Weyburn, but they are sure glad he did. Lamb saw just one game in the preseason and stopped 41 of the 43 shots he faced. The coaches marveled at how composed and calm Lamb looked in the net all night.

It hasn't been confirmed, but with the only other goalie on the roster being 18-year-old rookie Cody Levesque, it appears the crease belongs to Lamb this season. Although he's a new face among many returning players, Lamb says it didn't take long to get comfortable with his new mates.

"The returning guys did a great job of not only welcoming me but welcoming a lot of the younger guys too. Obviously, I'm coming in at 20 so it's not as scary for me to walk in the room and see all the new faces," he said. "They definitely welcomed the new guys great and it's really nice to see. It should be a great year."

Levesque is also one of the new guys who has been accepted with open arms by the team. He says he wants to learn as much as he can about the SJHL from his teammates but is also turning to Lamb for some goaltending guidance.

"He's played some really good hockey, so I'm hoping to pick up things from him. He's got lots of experience and is very consistent, he plays good all the time," Levesque explained. "If I'm going through a rough patch maybe he'll be able to help me out."

Levesque himself had a stellar season last year playing for Swift Current in Midget AAA. The dynamic 1-2 punch in net should hold down the backend and give the Red Wings a lot of opportunities to win hockey games. Combine that with their explosive offensive weapons, and you've got a good looking roster in the SJHL.

With all that in mind, Lamb has high hopes for the Red Wings this season.

"I think we have the team to go all the way, honestly. I know a lot of guys say that coming out of camp, but I think that's what we got here," Lamb stated. "I think we're going to be playing a lot of hockey and going deep into the playoffs. Hopefully, that's the expectations from everyone."

You can catch Lamb's debut in net tomorrow night when the Red Wings host the Yorkton Terriers in their home opener. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at Crescent Point Place.
