SGI and law enforcement reported 7,851 tickets issued in the month of August for speeding and other aggressive driving offenses.

Manager of Media Relations, Tyler McMurchy said the stats are part of the results of August's Traffic Safety Spotlight.

"It is the most common offense that you see on the roads, and the most commonly-ticketed offense," he noted. "It's not the highest we've ever seen, but it's higher than we'd like to see. Those posted speed limits are there for a reason."

At this time of year, McMurchy said, there are more people out on bikes, walking, and enjoying the nice weather while they can. School zones, he added, are also an important place to obey speed limits. Vulnerable road users also include motorcyclists.

"If you're traveling the highways, you're still going to encounter some construction zones, you're still going to encounter farmers moving their equipment from field to field as they finish up harvest," he reminded. "So, it's a really good idea to slow down, keep your focus on the road, and keep everybody safe."

"The faster you're going, the less time you have to react, and if you do hit something, you're going to do more damage," he added.

A ticket for 20 km/h over the limit will set you back $190, and it's going to be even higher if you're speeding through a school zone, due to the higher severity of school zone tickets.
