With three physicians planning to leave Weyburn by the end of the summer, many of their patients are wondering what they'll do for a family doctor this fall.

"It's very tragic that we're losing the doctors, and I'd just like to express my best wishes on behalf of myself and the Council, of saying thank you for your work that you've done within Weyburn," said Weyburn's Mayor, Marcel Roy. "I most certainly don't begrudge the doctors who are leaving. There are opportunities, and everybody looks for new opportunities, and that's basically what I've heard they're doing, so thank them for the time they've been here."

Dr. Tare Matiza will be leaving the Weyburn Health Centre on June 30th, and Drs. Allan Fong and Mary McCollam will be leaving the same office on August 28th. Read more HERE.

"Now we're looking towards trying to recruit more doctors coming into our city," said Roy. "We work as a City with the health region to find more doctors to come down to this area. They're going to have to be General Practicitioners. If they want to do specialized medicine, that's for the bigger centres. Here, it's a lot of General Practitioner, family doctoring."

With Weyburn having a lot to offer as just the right balance of not too big and not too small, Roy said it would be nice to have a recruit come to Weyburn and stay, as have so many in the past, such as Dr. Stewart and Dr. Eaglesham, who have been well-known mainstays in Weyburn.

"That's just the whole unique part about Weyburn, [whether they] be a doctor, a police Chief, an oilfield worker, a retail worker or a construction worker, Weyburn is not that big, but it's not that small. We still have a lot of stuff going on. There's going to be a lot of things that are going to continue to be of plus benefit here," he noted.
