The Midget AA John Hulbert Construction Wings were perfect on the weekend, picking up two wins on home ice. They beat the Lumsden/Bethune Lions 6-3 at Crescent Point Place Saturday afternoon and followed it up with a 4-1 over the Notre Dame Argos Sunday.

In the game Saturday, the Wings were the first on the board, when Axel Lund found the back of the net with 6:40 remaining in the opening period. Mitchell McDonald picked up the assist on the goal.

The Wings would make it 2-0 before the period was out when Spencer Ordahl picked up a power-play goal with 3:54 remaining. Gavin Doud and Albert Kim were credited with the assists on the goal.

The Lions would get on the board early in the second period, as McGuire Danbrook scored on Weyburn netminder Matt Dutchak at the 2:53 mark of the frame.

Weyburn got the goal back just over three minutes later when Rylan Neiszner scored. He was assisted by Doud and Kim on the goal.

Lumsden would shrink the deficit back to one when Parker Mymryk scored at the 8:40 mark of the period.

The Wings opened the third period up with a pair of goals within three minutes, starting with Ordahl’s second of the game just under two minutes in. Neiszner and Sam Chittenden assisted on the goal. Chittenden then scored a goal of his own with 15:08 left on the clock, making it a 5-2 game. Kim recorded the assist on the tally.

Kyler Nameth scored for Lumsden to pull back within two, but Neiszner scored his second of the game for Weyburn with 3:36 left on the clock. His short-handed goal was unassisted.

Sunday afternoon, the Wings entertained the Notre Dame Argos in a game which could be best described as chippy, with the two teams combining for 126 penalty minutes.

Weyburn would start the scoring with 5:49 left in the first period when Hudson Hall beat Notre Dame goalie Noah Cline. His unassisted goal was followed up with a tally from Mitchell McDonald 1:26 later. McDonald’s goal was assisted by Doud and Lund.

It would be 3-0 Weyburn just 1:20 after that when Brogan Schmeltzer scored on the power play. Doud and Douglas assisted on the goal.

The Argos would get on the board just before the period expired. Colby Himmelspeck got the puck past Kobe Kmita on the power play with 30 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Neither team was able to score in the second period.

In the third, the Wings would add to the lead when Kale Williamson picked up a power-play goal with 9:12 on the clock. Schmeltzer and Douglas were credited with the assists.

Then, things got a little rough between the two teams. The two teams combined for 82 minutes in penalties, most of it coming from a scrum which saw two players from each team handed four-minute double minors for head contact, as well as 10-minute misconduct penalties.

With the pair of wins on the weekend, the Wings improved to 15-11-3-1 on the season, and are five points back of Prairie Storm for fourth in the South Division of the SAAHL. The Wings will look to close the gap Monday when they head to Regina for a game against the Capitals.
