Those pesky bugs are back. With the recent wet weather, the mosquito population has been increasing. Phil Currie, West Nile Coordinato for the Ministry of Health explains, "they're certainly optimal when the conditions for the emergence of small-seeded species inluding the culex tarsalis, the one that carries west nile virus. We haven't seen conditions like this for many years and we will see a large number of nuisance mosquitoes in the coming weeks."

Although the pests emerging now are primarily nuisance Currie says it is never too early to protect ourselves. The high risk period for the West Nile Virus is between mid-July and August.

Currie notes the City of Weyburn has a great mosquito control program. The City of Weyburn recently received $8,000 in cost sharing money for the prevention of the west nile mosquitoes.
