New electoral boundaries were recently proposed by the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Saskatchewan.

Under the proposed boundary changes Assiniboia and areas around Regina would become part of the Souris-Moose Mountain riding.

“The proposal moves the riding farther west from the south and starts to include Assiniboia and then goes up north of Regina,” said Souris-Moose Mountain MP Dr. Robert Kitchen. “That's a little shocking to see that aspect of things, because most of those people around Regina are suburbanites. They commute into the city, they don't commute to Estevan, Bengough, or to Moosomin. That's not their pattern or travel, and so that is a little bit shocking as to why they've done that.”

Kitchen said the proposed boundaries would not make a huge difference to him, other than taking more mileage to get out into different parts of the riding.

“I'm hoping over the next while to get to talking to some of the communities in certain areas to find out what their thoughts are, and to hear their ideas.”

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Saskatchewan is holding public hearings in regards to the proposed boundaries throughout June and July. One takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion in Weyburn on Tuesday, July 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
