Weyburn’s art gallery has a new exhibit called Reflections: A Water Journey, by Saskatchewan Artist, Sharron Labatt.

“It invites us to think about the waterways in Saskatchewan,” said Regan Lanning, Curator and Arts Coordinator for the City of Weyburn. “We have over 100,000 lakes in Saskatchewan and our relationship with those waterways hasn't always been positive historically.”

Labatt has lived along Katepwa Lake, and Echo Lake.

“This artist living on the lakes has seen a lot of changes to the waterways over her time, so she invites us to think about what we are putting into our waterways and what we are taking out of them.”

Lanning said the exhibit features paintings and a sculpture.

An opening reception is taking place on Wednesday, August 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Labatt in attendance to answer questions.

There are other exhibits that can be viewed at the gallery, such as Crossroads by the Canadian Fiber Arts Organization, and an exhibit by local photographer, Chris Borshowa. My Vision, Bead Art by Olha Matiusheva can be seen at the Credit Union Art Gallery.

The Weyburn Arts Council also recently completed a mural.

“It was a long time coming. It was a project we started way back in 2019 with the announcement of a mural design contest,” said Lanning. “We had close to 20 design submissions and in the end, we chose the work of Jonnae Haupstien.”

The council planned to paint it in 2020 but was unable to.

“We ended up painting it as a community as sort of a giant paint by number during the grand opening of the credit union Spark Centre.”

The mural can be seen on Fuel & Kat’s Shop in downtown Weyburn.
