Jody Holzmiller, Secretary of the newly formed Lions Club in Weyburn, joined us this morning to fill us in on everything Lions Club.

“The Lions Club is, as you would suspect, a service club," said Jody.  "Our club here in Weyburn is newly formed, we currently have 25 members. The Lions Club International motto is ‘We Serve’ so basically we are a club organized to serve the people in our community."

She noted that there are a number of services that Lions Club International supports, including their sight program, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness and aiding with service dogs. Along with that, local clubs also support local causes and that is their goal this weekend.

“We have our first inaugural fundraising event coming up," said Jody.  "On August 25th at Riverside Park we will be hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8:00 AM until noon.”

The breakfast will include pancakes, sausage and a drink and is $10 for adults and $5 for kids ten and under.

So what is their first cause in Weyburn?

“All of the funds that we gather from the Pancake Breakfast will go to help support a fully accessible playground at St. Michael's school.”

Jody also mentioned that this isn't the club that we remember.

“It used to be a strictly male club and then they branched out and became Lions and Leos and now its just Lions and we take anyone who's interested," she said. “We can take students, adults, males, females, anyone who is interested in serving our community.”

She noted that anyone who is interested in joining the Lions Club can contact either herself or Yvonne Jones.

Along with the fundraising breakfast, they are also preparing for another big event in the fall.

“With every new Lions Club, we have to become chartered into Lions Club International," said Jody.  "We will be having our charter night on November 2 at the Weyburn Legion, more details to follow, but it’s a pretty big deal in the world of Lions Club. It's when clubs from the surrounding area come and welcome our club to the Lions Club International so we’ll have some dignitaries and entertainment and possibly a dance to follow.”

She added that they will also be working with the City of Weyburn as part of the "Adopt-A-Trail" program and are planning a homemade perogy and cabbage roll making bee for early winter.
