The Biofuels Legislation passed by the Federal Government will aggravate the global food crisis while offering no proven benefit to farmers according to the National Farmers Union.

Bill C-33 was recently passed and will require the use of 5% renewable content in gasoline by 2010 and 2% renewable content in diesel fuel by no later than 2012.

Women's President, Colleen Ross, says the mandates are not viable with our current high grain prices.

Ross says the ethanol industry is dependant on chief grains and she doesn't see the renewable content working.

She says funds designated for bill C-33 would be better spent researching ways of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
