Weyburn Regional Economic Development is funded by the City of Weyburn and RM of Weyburn.

Twila Walkeden, Executive Director, Weyburn Regional Economic Development presented to Weyburn City Council on Monday.

"Whenever we do a yearly work plan and budget, we are very transparent in what's ahead for us in 2018," explained Walkeden.

"That allows us to work really closely with both the City and the RM in what they expect in terms of economic initiatives as well."

Walkeden believes 2018 is going to be a growth year for Weyburn

"So I think for Weyburn in 2018 we are going to see a rebound in terms of our economic strength. We're already seeing the commodity prices increasing. Last year was a great year still for the Ag producers. We're hoping that with increased moisture in the spring here, we're going to see that being a strengthening in our economy."

The 2016 Census data gives Weyburn's Regional Economic Development a lot of information which is helpful to attract businesses to the area. There were certain stats that stood out for WRED in the census including the median age of Weyburn.

"Surprisingly Weyburn has had a decrease in Median age by about 7% in the last few years. That's over 3 times more than any city in the province."

Weyburn is 2.5 years younger than the Canadian average.

Walkeden presented to Council that Weyburn is spending about $278 million and looking at the region of 60 - 70 km around Weyburn, that amount goes up to $1 billion.

"When Investors take a look at communities they want to know these dollars and cents.

Weyburn spends around $36.5 million on food a year with 29%, around $10,585,000 on eating out.

"Weyburn Regional Economic Development is more than just attracting grocery stores and shoe stores," explained Walkeden who went on to say that Manufacturing is an important opportunity of investment for Weyburn.

Walkeden also added that Weyburn residents are the cities biggest cheerleaders.

"If our residents are proud of our community and realise the economic potential we have then that goes a long way in attracting investors."
