The Saskatchewan RCMP is bracing for protests at border crossings in southeast Saskatchewan this weekend. A heavy police presence is in North Portal and Northgate ahead of planned demonstrations for the two communities.

The RCMP issued a statement late in the week advising people that there will be some disruptions to the normal flow of traffic due to these protests. The Village of North Portal stated they are expecting up to 80 semis and 120 passenger vehicles to take part in the demonstrations.

The RCMP stated they will be aiming to use communication and a measured response through the weekend, and are making efforts to engage all stakeholders before and during the demonstrations. This will be to ensure everyone who is involved in the demonstrations understands the current legal boundaries of a peaceful and lawful protest.

The RCMP have stated those without access to a staging area on private land will be turned away from the demonstrations.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe also warned those who will be taking part in the protests to not break the law.

“The Emergencies Act is in place,” Moe said Friday. “I would hope that each of you has communicated with law enforcement or those involved in your convoy that your voice is being heard and is being heard within the confines of what the law is today.”
