“That was an embarrassing effort tonight.”

Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes didn’t mince any words after the team was shutout 4-0 at home by the Melville Millionaires Wednesday. The loss was the second time the season the Wings had been shut out at Crescent Point Place.

“We’re very complacent with single efforts,” Mapes added. “If it’s one single game, one single shift, one single period, we’re very complacent.”

The Red Wings put 30 shots on the Melville net, all of which were turned aside by Kelton Pyne, a 16-year-old call-up from the U18 AAA Regina Pat Canadians. Pyne was also helped out by the iron of the goal, with at least four shots ringing off the posts around him.

At the other end, Jackson Fellner turned aside 27 of the 31 shots he faced.

The Millionaires had two goals from Rylan Bruns, one of which came off a turnover in the third period while Melville was shorthanded. Also scoring for the visitors were Zach Cain and Nicolas Samson.

When it came to special teams, both teams were able to keep the opponent from scoring on the power play. The Red Wings went 0-for-3 with the man advantage while the Millionaires were 0-for-4.

With the win, the Millionaires moved above the Red Wings into 11th place overall in the SJHL, and into third place in the Viterra Division, with 10 points. The Red Wings, who have now lost seven games in a row, are in last place overall with nine points.

The Wings will look to snap their slump on Friday night, as they welcome the Humboldt Broncos to Crescent Point Place. They will also get a return matchup with the Millionaires Saturday, in a game that was originally scheduled to start the season on September 24th.
