The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings split their games on the weekend, as they played host to the top team in Canada Friday, then travelled to Yorkton to take on the Terriers Saturday.

The game Friday would see Red Wings finish the opening period with the lead, but the North Stars would take all the momentum with a pair of quick goals in the second and go on to a 6-1 victory.

The Wings opened the scoring in the game late in the first period, when Jakob Kalin notched his 14th of the season with 41 seconds to play. The goal, scored on the power play, was assisted by Ryley Morgan and Elijah Anderson.

From there, the North Stars took over.

At the 9:29 mark of the middle frame, Marshall Light would score to even things up. This was followed by a goal from Tynan Ewart 15 seconds later, making it 2-1 Battlefords. Steven Kesslering would then make it 3-1 with 6:08 to play in the second, and a goal from Evan Waldie with 3:10 left on the clock made it 4-1.

In the third, Holden Doell would notch two goals to make it 6-1.

From the game Friday, the Wings then got on the bus for Yorkton Saturday, as they were looking to bounce back with a win over the Terriers. Strong goaltending on both sides would be the story of the game. In the end, the Wings came out on top, winning 3-2 in a shootout.

The Terriers would open the scoring in the second period when Dylan Ruptash beat Dazza Mitchell 8:45 into the frame. The Wings responded with 4:30 to play in the period when Weyburn captain Matthew Reidy scored his fourth of the season to even things up.

The Terriers, though, were determined to hold on to lead. Cade Kennedy scored just 18 seconds after Reidy to make it 2-1 Yorkton after 40 minutes of play.

In the third period, Mitchell and Yorkton netminder Caleb Allen played strong, but Allen would be the first to crack.

Kalin scored his 15th of the campaign, and second of the weekend, with 4:02 left on the clock in regulation. Matteo Turrin and Blake Norris had the assists on the goal.

In overtime, neither team was able to score, leading to the shootout.

In the shootout, Weyburn sent Ty Mason, Jackson Hassman and Kalin out. Allen turned aside Mason and Hassman, but Kalin was able to beat him. At the other end, Mitchell turned aside all three Yorkton shooters to secure the win.

The Red Wings will now prepare for a home-and-home series with the Melville Millionaires this weekend. It starts at Crescent Point Place Friday night.
