It is not often that a gripping true story comes to the theatrical stage, however, the time has arrived with Motus O Prisoner of Tehran, which will hit that stage Wednesday, April 5 at the Cugnet Centre.

Prisoner of Tehran is the riveting autobiographical account of Marina Nemat, who at the age of 16 was imprisoned in Iran’s notorious political prison, Evin for over two years. During her stay, she experienced the horrors of torture and was almost executed, however, she was eventually able to flee to Canada in 1991.

“We saw this at a showcase back in 2019 in Saskatoon and we were just absolutely smitten with the story. It was like, oh my god, this is such a moving story. We need to bring that to Weyburn. And part of our mandate as concert series is to bring a variety of diverse entertainment. Good quality entertainment and try to do different things and this is different, and this is lived experience,” said Linda Aitken, President of Weyburn Concert Series

“It's an incredible story, and I think for us, as Canadians in particular, so many of us live quite comfortable lives, and I'm going to speak as a mature woman, we are pretty lucky here, and I think this lady's story is one we all need to hear to truly appreciate, what we expect as the norm here, it isn't in so many places in the world.”

The stage production is a beautiful collaboration of dance, theatre, and storytelling. Nemat has also written a book called the same name which can be found in 28 different countries. Nemat will be offering a question-and-answer period after the show.

Advance tickets can be purchased at Old Fashion Foods and the Weyburn Review for $40 or at the door for $45. Doors open at 6:45 pm and the show will begin at 7:30 pm.
