A piece of Weyburn’s history is no longer standing.

Earlier this month, work began for the demolition of the roundhouse at the City of Weyburn’s public works yard. The building was no longer needed after it had been replaced by a new fleet storage facility.

“This building was over a hundred years old, and originated as a rail roundhouse where I believe it was CP rail did repairs and maintenance on their cars,” explained Todd Bedore, the Superintendent of Public Works with the City of Weyburn.

The roundhouse was in need of repairs, and the city had made the decision to build a new facility, noting it would be cheaper to build new than perform the needed work on the older facility.

While the building may no longer be standing, a part of it will be used going forward.

“We’re just going to keep the cement pad there,” Bedore added. “We have a brand new fleet storage building there so we’ll just keep the cement pad for parking vehicles on, and I think fire (Weyburn Fire Department) is going to do some training on that cement pad as well.”

The new fleet storage building was officially opened in August of this year.
