A scam has been identified as targeting the customers of SaskPower and attempting to retrieve their log-in credentials and credit card information.

It comes in the form of an email sent to SaskPower customers and asks them to log in as there has been an issue processing their last bill.

Once someone has input their credentials into the fake website, they are immediately asked to put in their credit card information as well.

SaskPower spokesperson Scott McGregor details some of the ways you can tell the difference between a real and fraudulent email.

"One of the telltale signs is we look at the e-mail address that the email is sent from. With this one, in particular, the name of the sender is a SaskPower email, but the actual address is something completely different, that's the first telltale sign."

"The second is that the link they're instructing you to click on to log in to your MySaskPower account is it looks like a real like, but if you hover over top of it or click on it you'll see that it's not a Saskpower website, that's the other telltale sign."

The email will also be using language that isn't usually used by SaskPower in their emails.

McGregor says that if you do end up falling for the scam, there are a few steps you can take to make sure the scammers do as little damage as possible.

"If anybody has clicked the link and entered their information in ... they really should give their credit card issuer a phone call, report the incident, as well give our phone center a call to reset your credentials to your MySaskPower account"

"We want everyone to be careful when they're receiving any sort of communication from someone claiming to be with SaskPower," said McGregor, "So it's just something to always be on the lookout and know what to look for."
